K9 Crystal Explained




K9 Crystal

K9 is a Chinese Optical Borosilicate Crown Crystal (Optically Clear) with low inclusions and imperfections ideal for use in lenses and prisms, optics and decorative crystal lighting. It has good physical properties and can be polished similar to lead crystal, weighing approximately 15 percent less than full leaded crystal having a lead content of only 10 percent. K9 crystal offers a high refractive index and high clarity making it a good option for the manufacture of high end chandeliers offering both durability and excellent quality.


When most people talk about bringing out the “crystal,” they are often referring to a type of glass that is made from silica, lead oxide, soda or potash, and other additives. Lead crystal is prized for its durability and decorative properties, even if it does not necessarily possess a crystalline structure. It is referred to as crystal because, years ago, the Italian term “cristallo” was used to refer to Murano glass imitations. Lead crystal is the type that is most commonly used for wine glasses and other decorative ornaments around the home. In the U.S., glasses with a lead monoxide content of 1 percent are automatically categorized as crystal. In Europe, on the other hand, crystal is defined as crystal with a lead content that ranges from 10 to 30 percent.


Glass, especially those made from soda-lime, are cloudy even when held up against the light. Crystal, on the other hand, is known for its clarity. This is why crystal is a popular choice for chandeliers, jewelry, and stemware.


Similar to clarity, the crystal’s refractive quality also has a great deal to do with its lead content. Fine crystal, particularly if it has a lead content that ranges from 36 to 70 percent, sparkles in direct sunlight. Optically clear crystal, another type that contains lead, goes a step further when polished and distortion free. This type of crystal is known for the rainbow prisms it creates when placed under a light.


Crystal is typically cut and polished in a precise manner, it is also smooth to the touch. In contrast, glass tends to be brittle and sharp. One way to tell if a piece is crystal or glass is to feel the facets and overall design of the item. Crystal will be much smoother than glass.







Lumens the answers

What is a Lumen?

iStock_lumen-pic  A brightness of a bulb is measured in Lumens (Lm), the higher the number of Lumens the brighter the bulb. Traditionally we have gone by the amount of watts a bulb is to measure its brightness, however, watts only measure the amount of electricity used and not the brightness. With the increase of lower wattage bulbs now available it is important to know how much light it will give out. Bulb manufactures have begun to print the “Lumen” value on the side of light bulb boxes to indicate how much light a bulb gives out in all directions.


The wattage will still be shown on the box, this should not be used to guess how bright a bulb is. It’s just to compare the amount of electricity used with the brightness of the bulb, shown in Lumens (Lm). In the short term this may lead to some confusion when confronted with a bulb that reads:

10W/710 Lm (10 Watts / 710 Lumens)

This is equivalent to the standard 60W filament bulb we are all accustomed too. Below is a comparison table that offers an approximate guide to how the new LED energy saving bulbs compare with conventional bulbs:

LED Bulbs Explained



LED (light-emitting diodes) are a type of electronic light source. LEDs are different from conventional light sources such as incandescent and halogen lamps. They last much longer, consume far less energy and emit very little heat. They are highly durable and do not feature fragile elements such as glass tubes or filaments; they are safer because they do not contain any mercury or lead.

LED bulbs use upto 90% less energy than conventional bulbs of equivalent brightness. LEDs are far more efficient at converting electricity, measured in watts, into light, which is measured in lumens. For example a 4W LED bulb can easily achieve light output comparable to a 50W halogen bulb.

Another advantage of LED bulbs is its outstanding life time expectation due to very efficient thermal management, LED bulbs are able to remove heat through heat sinks, to help prolong life expectancy of the bulb by slowing down lumen depreciation. A good LED bulb should last up to 50,000 hours.

Lighting can account for 20% of the overall energy bill for households and businesses alike. By switching to LED bulbs a considerable amount of money can be saved due to the lower wattages of the products, and the far longer life expectancy, once you have switched to LED bulbs, you will start to save money in less than a year.

LED bulbs are much safer than conventional bulbs, no harmful metals, give off little heat after prolonged use, absence of glass, so no jagged edges or broken glass to worry about. LEDs are eco-friendly as they cut carbon emissions (CO2), by using less energy.

LED bulbs are retrofit and are designed to work with existing light fittings and be can used as direct replacements. They are available in three colours, Warm White, Cool White and Daylight. Warm White is usually used in domestic capacities and is the normal colour associated with standard halogen bulbs, relaxing and comfortable. Cool White is a cooler white often associated with fluorescent tubes in offices or retail outlets, bright and clean. Daylight colour is a very white, bluish white and provides a very crisp light, energetic and refreshing. They are very durable and can stand very cold and rough conditions, also resistant to shock, vibration and external impacts, they make the perfect choice for all modern lighting conditions.
